Okotoks, in response to the sweltering weather and temperatures climbing to 30 °C (86 °F) this week, has activated cooling stations and extended access to public spray parks to help residents find relief from the heat.
Cooling stations available from May 29 to June 1
From Wednesday, May 29 to Saturday, June 1, several public buildings in Okotoks are functioning as cooling centres during regular business hours. These include the Okotoks Recreation Centre, Viking Rentals Centre, the Okotoks Art Gallery, and the Okotoks Museum & Archives. Visitors to these facilities will find free water bottles and a cool environment to rest and recuperate from the extreme temperatures.
Spray park hours extended
The Okotoks Spray Park is now operating with extended hours, staying open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. However, residents are advised to check current operating hours through Active Okotoks, as they may be adjusted without notice depending on conditions.
How to stay safe in extreme heat
The town urges all residents to be mindful of extreme heat risks. To remain safe and cool, it’s important to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and wear light, breathable clothing. Take regular cool showers or baths if your home lacks air conditioning, and never leave people or pets in parked vehicles. Vulnerable groups, including seniors, children, and people living alone, may require additional support—check in with your neighbours and family members.
Warning signs of heat-related illness
Should you feel overheated, it is essential to stop any activity, move to a shaded or cool area, and drink fluids immediately. If symptoms worsen or include fainting, nausea, or confusion, seek urgent medical help. Heatstroke can be life-threatening, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions or limited access to cooling resources.
Pets and heatwaves
Pets are just as vulnerable to intense heat. Avoid walking them on hot pavement, ensure they have constant access to fresh water, and never leave them in vehicles, even with windows cracked. If you witness a pet in distress inside a parked car, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Stay safe by the river
For those enjoying recreational time near the Sheep River, ensure every person wears a fitted life jacket. Exercise caution on riverbanks, which may be unstable due to erosion and fast-moving water. Storm ponds are off-limits for any activity. Details are available at okotoks.ca/river-safety.
Outdoor watering restrictions in place
A reminder to all residents that outdoor watering restrictions are currently active. To know your assigned watering days, visit okotoks.ca/water.
