Cold air surge this weekend in Northern Ontario
A frost advisory is now in effect for several regions across Northern Ontario, with Environment Canada warning of freezing temperatures expected to settle in Saturday night into Sunday morning, June 7 and 8. Although southern communities like Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, Hamilton, and Durham are currently not under alert, a sudden drop in overnight temperatures could potentially extend the advisory zone.
Gardeners and farmers across the north are especially urged to take precautionary action. Vulnerable vegetation and tender crops may suffer damage as temperatures hover near 0°C (32°F), particularly in low-lying or exposed areas.
Regions under advisory
The frost warning applies to a broad swath of Northern Ontario, including but not limited to:
Agawa – Lake Superior Park, Armstrong – Auden – Wabakimi, Beardmore – Jellicoe – Macdiarmid, Chapleau – Missinaibi Lake, Fraserdale – Pledger Lake, Geraldton – Longlac – Caramat, Kapuskasing – Hearst – Smooth Rock Falls, Manitouwadge – Hornepayne, Marathon – Schreiber, Nakina – Aroland – Pagwa, Wawa – Pukaskwa Park, and White River – Dubreuilville.
Preventive recommendations
Although no severe freeze is forecast, even a light frost could result in plant tissue damage. Residents in the named communities should consider covering delicate plants or moving potted vegetation indoors. Clear skies and light winds are likely to create ideal radiational cooling conditions, increasing the frost risk in sheltered zones.
Monitoring conditions
Meteorologists are closely monitoring temperature trends through Saturday evening. The advisory may be extended or upgraded if colder-than-expected air filters further south.
