Cold and cloudy conditions dominate South African provinces
This Monday, June 16, 2025, a significant cold snap is tightening its grip across South Africa, particularly over inland regions, where temperatures have dropped sharply. According to the South African Weather Service, cloudy to partly cloudy skies are expected over much of the country, accompanied by scattered rain and isolated showers along the southern coastline. Inland areas will experience cool to cold weather, while some northern zones may still see warmer daytime highs.
Very cold advisory for the interior of Western and Northern Cape
From Wednesday through Saturday, maximum temperatures are forecast to remain below 10°C (50°F) in the interior of the Western Cape and the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape. These areas will endure prolonged cold periods, particularly during the early mornings.
Provincial forecast highlights
Gauteng will see partly cloudy skies with cool to cold temperatures throughout the day. Pretoria will range from 6°C to 19°C (43°F to 66°F), while Johannesburg will start colder at 5°C (41°F) and peak at 18°C (64°F).
In Mpumalanga, skies remain cloudy, especially in the Highveld, with cool to cold air dominating. The Lowveld, including Skukuza, will reach a relatively warm 29°C (84°F).
Limpopo will be under cloudy skies, with temperatures ranging from cool to warm. Phalaborwa and Musina will reach highs of 27°C (81°F) and 26°C (79°F) respectively.
In the North West, fine and cool conditions will be dominant, although partly cloudy intervals are expected in the extreme east. Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom will both start near 1°C (34°F).
The Free State remains cold, particularly in Bethlehem, where a minimum of -3°C (27°F) is anticipated.
Strong winds and showers along the Western Cape coast
The Western Cape will experience cloudy, cold conditions in the south-west, with partly cloudy skies and moderate to fresh winds developing along the coast. Showers are expected, especially near George, Cape Town, and Riversdale, with temperatures holding below 20°C (68°F) in most locations.
In the Northern Cape, conditions will be fine and windy, with some cloudiness along the coast. Upington will reach 24°C (75°F), while Sutherland will barely climb above 17°C (63°F).
Eastern and southern coastal areas brace for late-day rainfall
The Eastern Cape, both in the western and eastern halves, starts with fine and cool weather. However, evening rainfall is likely along coastal towns, particularly Gqeberha, East London, and Port St Johns, where temperatures may climb to 24°C (75°F).
KwaZulu-Natal will enjoy fine to partly cloudy skies. Durban will top 25°C (77°F), supported by northerly winds, while Ladysmith will remain cooler inland, starting at 3°C (37°F).
