On Wednesday, July 9, a tornado watch issued earlier in the afternoon for areas north of Calgary was lifted by Environment Canada around 8:00 p.m. local time.
The watch, which was issued around 5:00 p.m., covered Airdrie, large parts of Rocky View County, the Drumheller region, and communities along the QEII Highway as far north as Olds.
Meteorologists had warned of severe thunderstorms in the area with the potential to produce isolated tornadoes during the early evening hours. These weather conditions warranted close monitoring due to the increased risk of localized extreme events.
The federal weather agency continues to urge caution whenever threatening weather is approaching. In the event of a tornado or tornado warning, people are advised to seek shelter indoors, preferably on the lowest floor, and to stay away from outside walls and windows.
